Amazon announces they are creating a The Lord of the Rings prequel television series.

After rumors were abound, Amazon officially announced today that it will be partnering with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line on a television series based on Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. This new series will be streamed on Amazon and will be a prequel series set in Middle Earth before the events of The Lord of the Rings.

"The television adaptation will tell new stories based in the period preceding The Fellowship of the Ring, the novel that provided the basis for the first part of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy."

Sharon Tal Yguado, Amazon’s new head of scripted programming, commented that;
"“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen."
“We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”"
It's going to be very interesting to dive back into the world of Middle Earth under a new direction that is not led by Peter Jackson (who created the The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy film series). It's my belief that this new series will use the films as an inspiration but we'll most likely see some definite changes.

Are you excited to return to Middle Earth to explore stories and regions untold?
