Meet two new alien races featured in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Entertainment Weekly is featuring Star Wars: The Last Jedi in an upcoming issue and what is even better is that this issue gives fans a look at two new alien species that will be featured in the film. Both of these species were created through Neal Scanlan’s creature shop and they look great.
The first species (seen above with Chewbacca) is known as the Porgs. These wide-eyed creatures are native to the planet of Ahch-To which is the site of the first Jedi temple and where Luke Skywalker is found at the end of The Force Awakens. Not much is known about these cute little guys yet but I am excited to see them in the film.
The second species (seen above) is known as the Caretakers. They are also found on the planet of Ahch-To and live on the island where Luke is found. Director Rian Johnson states,
“They’re kind of these sort of fish-bird type aliens who live on the island. They’ve been there for thousands of years, and they essentially keep up the structures on the island.”He continues to elaborate on the Caretakers by talking about their look.
"“They’re all female, and I wanted them to feel like a remote sort of little nunnery. Neal Scanlan’s crew designed them, and costume designer Michael Kaplan made these working clothes that also reflected sort of a nun-like, spartan sort of existence.”Johnson goes on to talk about how they communicate with Luke Skywalker through a "“a blubbery sort of Scottish fish talk”". It's then stated that they are not thrilled to have Luke on the island but they "“tolerate” his presence.""
This new race seems pretty interesting and it'll be fun to see what kind of role they'll play in the film. What do you think about these two new species for the Star Wars universe?
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in theaters on December 15, 2017.
