Lucasfilm confirms the true identity of Star Wars: The Force Awakens' riot control Stormtrooper!

One of the break out stars of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was an unexpected Stormtrooper who was given the designation of TR-8R by fans. (Which spells out "traitor".) This was the Stormtrooper wielding the electrified Z6 Baton who goes up against the lightsaber wielding Finn and yells out, "Traitor!" This Stormtrooper has had countless memes created about him and people began to wonder who he really was. The speculation is now over as Lucasfilm has officially released his identity.

Lucasfilm has revealed that the Stormtrooper is in fact FN-2199. This designation may seem familiar if you have been keeping up with the various Star Wars books being released. In the book Before the Awakening by Greg Rucka, the characters of Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron all receive a bit of a backstory. In this story you learn that FN-2199 was a part of Finn's training squad.

Since his designation was FN-2199, his friends called him "Nines". In the above art you can see Nines sitting on the bench to the far left with the red hair. It turns out that Nines is a part of an elite riot control squad which is why he was wielding, and very proficient with, the Z6 Baton. There were two other Stormtroopers in the squad with Nines and Finn; "Zero" and "Slip". It was revealed that Slip was the Stormtrooper who is killed at the start of The Force Awakens and streaked blood across Finn's helmet. This also explains why Finn reacted the way he did to a fellow Stormtrooper being shot down and possibly why he started to rethink his involvement with the First Order. Also, it explains why the shout of, "Traitor!" and the showdown between Nines and Finn seemed personal. I know that the next time I watch this fight I'll be doing so in a new light.
