River Song returns to Doctor Who this Christmas!

Buckle up, Doctor Who fans! This Christmas is going to be a wild ride.

It has just officially been announced by the BBC that this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special will see the return of actress Alex Kingston as Professor River Song. The special was written by Steven Moffat and will start filming this week.
"It’s Christmas Day in the future and the TARDIS is parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure. Time traveller River Song meets her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas."
Commenting on her return, Alex Kingston stated;
"“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”"
Showrunner Steven Moffat added;
"“Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who - and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time...”"
This news will certainly split the Doctor Who fandom into two catergories; those that will be happy and excited to see River return and those that will not be. I have to admit that I am on the side of not being excited. I really loved the character of River Song when she was first introduced in the episode "Silence in the Library" but with every reappearance she has gotten less mysterious and in some cases (not all) less likable. I just personally feel that she became over used for a little while and the character ran thin. How can we truly miss a character and enjoy their return if they never actually leave? (It's the same issue with the Daleks.) It's hard to say that as I like Alex Kingston and do like River. I just don't like her as much as I once did which is unfortunate.

Are you excited to see River Song return to the show? Do you think that the character should remain gone for a little while longer? Let me know what side you fall on!
