J.J. Abrams reveals amazing Star Wars: The Force Awakens info on Kylo Ren!

Adam Driver as Kylo Ren
There is a lot of mystery surrounding the upcoming villain in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren. He gained quite a bit of notoriety when the first trailer was released and he ignited his "cross guard lightsaber". Since then, fans have been trying to figure out who this character could be and what stories lay in his path.

We know that actor Adam Driver will be playing Ren and that he has allied himself to the First Order which is a remnant of the Empire that still looms over the galaxy. However, J.J. Abrams recently did an interview with Entertainment Weekly that reveals some very interesting news on the character.
*Possible spoilers ahead.

Speaking on Kylo Ren's look, Abrams stated,
"“The movie explains the origins of the mask and where it’s from, but the design was meant to be a nod to the Vader mask. [Ren] is well aware of what’s come before, and that’s very much a part of the story of the film.”"
This is pretty cool news and makes me wonder if we'll see any other nods to Darth Vader within Kylo Ren's character. I think it is pretty cool that he has been studying the past. Next Abrams touched on the subject of Ren's lightsaber and why it has that "fiery" look as opposed to previous sabers that have a clean blade look.
"“The lightsaber is something that he built himself, and is as dangerous and as fierce and as ragged as the character.”"
Many fans had guessed that his lightsaber was either malfunctioning or not made properly and it turns out they may not be far off. A homemade lightsaber adds a lot of mystery to this character that I really like. Was the lightsaber constructed from old documents found or perhaps stories handed down? Given that it is homemade, Entertainment Weekly begins to speculate if Kylo Ren is perhaps the inverse of Luke Skywalker, a character who builds himself up from nothing but just on the evil side of things. Abrams answered carefully.
"“As you see in the best of storytelling, and no doubt the best of Star Wars, these are tales in which an everyperson has to step up. And I think that what makes Ren so unique is that he isn’t as fully formed as when we meet a character such as Darth Vader. And I think that there are two sides to the Force. Both sides, arguably, would see themselves as the hero of their story, and I think that applies here.”"
Lastly, fans have wondered if Kylo Ren was a true Sith or not and it appears as though he may not be. Yet. Obviously, he is not a "Darth" but it appears as though "Kylo Ren" is not his actual name either.
"“He is a character who came to the name Kylo Ren when he joined a group called the Knights of Ren."
This makes me wonder if we will be seeing some flashbacks of Kylo Ren's character throughout the film.

Kylo Ren is shaping up to be an extremely interesting character and it is being reported that he will be very deep with emotions and a style of character that fans have not yet seen in the Star Wars universe. I am very excited to learn more about his character and see the film!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be in theaters on December 18, 2015.
