Original, unaltered Star Wars trilogy could possibly be coming to Blu-Ray!

Fans have been wanting one thing in particular for a very long time and there have even been rumors in the past that they may get it. However, time came and went and nothing happened. Now once again the rumors are coming around but this time the sources are a lot more reliable. What do the fans want? A re-release of the original, unaltered Star Wars trilogy! To once again see A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi as they did when they were younger in the late 70s through to the early 90s.

It is being reported that Disney is currently working on plans to re-release the original cut of the original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-Ray. This is great news but I am curious if they will only be releasing it on Blu-Ray. What about DVDs?

It seems that the reason that this project has taken so long is that some of the original negatives of the film have been damaged since the film was originally shot. In the past George Lucas commented about how he only wanted the Special Editions out there for fans and fans who wanted the originals could get them on VHS. However, Lucas is no longer with Lucas Films or Disney so there is the real possibility that this could now be overlooked. Secondly, I believe 20th Century Fox still retains the distribution rights to the Star Wars films through to 2020 after which they will go to Lucasfilm and Disney.

There is no current release date for these Blu-Ray releases but if Disney is smart and a smart move would be to release them around the time of Star Wars: Episode VII hitting theaters. But again, there is that hiccup with 20th Century Fox so we may not see these until 2020. Let's hope that Disney and 20th Century Fox can work something out for the film rights.

I know this will be an instant purchase for many fans out there. Are you excited for the possible release of the unaltered films?
