Sherlock to become the Master?

November 23, 2013 will mark the 50th anniversary for the British science fiction show Doctor Who and there would be no better villian to make an appearance during the big 50th Anniversary special than the Doctor's arch nemesis, the Master.

Rumor has it that the Doctor Who showrunner, Steven Moffat, has his sights on Benedict Cumberbatch to portray the Master. Cumberbatch is currently best known for his role as the modern day Sherlock Holmes on the BBC show Sherlock (which is also written by Steven Moffat). Cumberbatch's next works will include The Hobbit (he will be the voice of Smaug and the necromancer) and Star Trek 2 (unknown character).

An unknown source told The Exress, "“It’s fitting that the Doctor comes face to face with his ultimate enemy, The Master, for the 50th anniversary and it’s felt Benedict is the perfect choice if schedules can work,” we’re told. “Fans will love the idea of the man who plays Sherlock Holmes taking on the Doctor’’."

Expectations for the 50th are certainly high and rumors circulating it have been flowing for quite some time. So fans should take the Cumberbatch news with a grain of salt until it is confirmed.

I personally hope that this is nothing more than rumor and that somebody steps forward soon to dismiss it. I cannot picture Cumberbatch as the Master at all and I feel that his casting would simply be for ratings (which will be high as it is since it's the 50th anniversary special!). If this casting is true, then it seems that Moffat is taking the easy way out casting someone he already works with and is currently a hot name. Please, Moffat, take your time and make smart decisions.
