'Battlestar Galactica' Set For The Big Screen

Its been rumored and whispered recently that there would be a new Battlestar Galactica movie coming to theaters and for once the rumors were true! It has been confirmed that Bryan Singer (Apt Pupil, X-Men, X2, Valkyrie, Superman Returns) will be creating a new Battlestar Galactica movie. Writing the script is John Orloff (Band of Brothers, A Mighty Heart, Legend of the Gaurdians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole). With the confirmation of a new Battlestar Galactica movie, the big question is which television show will it be more like; the 1978 Glen Larson series or the 2004 Ron Moore series?
While some fans may feel that you couldn't go wrong with the old classic vibe, Battlestar fans in general cannot deny the appeal and power of the new Ron Moore series that captured a whole new audience.

While speaking to Hitfix, Orloff had this to say concerning the new Battlestar Galactica:
I'm a huge fan of the original series and of the second show, too. But I always thought the first show was a little too heavily reliant on 'Star Wars,' you know? Whereas I think the second show was really original and really cool. And I think I've come up with a way to write this movie that won't f*ck any of that up. I'm not sure how much they want me to talk about it. Let's just say it's not what you expect. It will all work in the universe that exists. It will not conflict with anything Ron Moore has done. I don't think you can compete with what he's done.
From this quote fans are already comparing this potential movie to JJ Abrams' Star Trek. A film that for the most part remained faithful to canon but also had fun playing around with the continuity in order to make their universe unique and fresh. This sounds like a fair comparison and I will not argue against it. However, for just one moment, let's look at the big picture of this film. With the confirmation of this movie we know that we are getting a new film franchise. Or at least Bryan Singer will be shooting for that. There is no way you can tell the story of Battlestar Galactica in a single two hour movie. It just won't happen. If it does, I'd bet that it turns out like garbage. This is just too large of a story for one movie. We will most likely be getting two or three films and they'll probably shoot for the trilogy because its the cool thing to do and they will want more money.

I haven't seen too much of the 1978 Glen Larson series and never understood why it kept going after they found Earth. It became a very weird soap opera. However, a
s a big fan of the 2004 Ron Moore series I can say that I am excited to see how this movie turns out and will definitely be following any new developments.
