The Turtles Are Back!

Over the past few days I had been reading rumors that Nickelodeon had picked up the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a new show in 2012. I wasn't a fan of the last 'new show' so I didn't know that had finished yet. But it has now been confirmed by The Wall Street Journal that these rumors were indeed true and that Nickelodeon feels that they can breath some more life into this beloved franchise. Not much information is yet known about this series but we do know that it will be CG animation and the show will apparently focus on individual character attributes.

From the promotional photo released from Nickelodeon we can see that all the basics of the Turtles are there - although Michaelangelo's nunchucks are a bit fuzzy. We can see that the Turtles will have individual skin tones (raise your hand if you remember Donatello with a green/brown-ish tone when you were little!) and will be wearing strategically placed athletic tape, either for intimidation or due to injury. I can only assume that they were trying to portray the characters' personalities with their facial expressions but except for Raphael they all look a bit goofy.

I can only hope that Nickelodeon knows what they are doing and that they will not ruin one of my favorite childhood franchises. So far the newer Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle shows have been doing well but is there a point where you are trying to push it too far? All the same, with the addition of the Turtles along with Avatar: Legend of Korra, 2012 will be a big year for Nickelodeon.

UPDATE:
The show is scheduled to air 26 episodes. Check out a quick sneak peak (19 seconds) of the show at EW. You don't get to see much but you get an idea of the animation style.
