Morena Baccarin to suit up as The Wasp?

With screen tests being done today for one of the final roles on Joss Whedon's The Avengers it looks like casting could wrap up real soon. Among those present for the screen test are Morena Baccarin (V, Firefly), Jessica Lucas (Melrose Place), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), and Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs The World). These actresses were screening for a role as "Nick Fury's new sidekick". No official word has been given as to who the 'sidekick' is but fingers seem to be pointing to Janet van Dyne, also known as The Wasp. They might be pointing that way though because it's a major female role that hasn't been filled yet.

It appears that things may be tipped in the favor of Baccarin however seeing as how she has a past with Joss Whedon (Firefly/Serenity) and has publicly stated that she would never turn down a chance to work with Joss. She has also been rumored to have been seen picking up back issues of The Avengers comics, so she's doing her homework. Also, it doesn't hurt that she already is the spitting image of Janet van Dyne/The Wasp with her natural look combined with her current pixie cut.

Two things that are consistently present in Marvel films are cameos and Easter eggs throughout the entire film. It is reported that the deal for this 'sidekick' role is said to involve a nine-picture option, so it's clear that the winner of the role will at least be seen in other Marvel movies to come.

It is being reported that the role in question is actually for the character of Maria Hill (interim Director of S.H.I.E..L.D.). It also appears that Joss Whedon is favoring Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) for the role. The role for Janet van Dyne/The Wasp however is still up in the air.
