Johnny Depp reveals how he came up with the persona of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Over the course of his career, Johnny Depp has had a lot of success. One character in particular that stands out for him will always be Captain Jack Sparrow. Although, this character is a relatively newer character (first appearing in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003), the role has become iconic for Depp.

Depp put Jack Sparrow on the film map with the character's unusual personality and Depp has finally revealed how that personality came about. Fans know that part of the character was shadowing musician Keith Richards but the other half is much more interesting. Speaking to Collider, Depp stated,
"In the original screenplay Captain Jack was written as a swashbuckler, a pirate who swings in, sort of fights a little bit and then swings out, grabs a girl and that’s it. I had different ideas for him. This sounds weird but Captain Jack was born in a sauna. My sauna. I was looking at various aspects of the character and I figured this guy has been on the high seas for the majority of his life and therefore has dealt with inescapable heat to the brain. So I cranked the sauna up to about 1000 degrees and sat in there as long as I could until it started to affect me mentally. It was very, very hot, as was my brain. While you’re in there in that kind of heat you can’t stand still, but the worst of it is if you move, it kills you. So that gave me the idea that his brain has been par-boiled to some degree. Also in terms of his body language I felt that when he was on the ship he would be fine as the ship would be bounding away. He would have sea legs, but when he gets on land he cannot get land legs. He would be looking wobbly and Disney disagreed."
Depp later revealed how Disney was so unhappy with the portrayal that they tried many times to convince him that it had to be changed. Depp refused saying that they would have to fire him to change the character.

This is extremely fascinating and a very unique way to come up with the character. What is now even more interesting is that Disney recently revealed that they are looking to reboot the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and will not be bringing back Johnny Depp. I wonder what kind of Jack Sparrow Disney will give us in the reboot. Or if Jack will even be back.
