Could Rain Johnson direct Star Wars: Episode VIII?

Disney and LucasFilm have been keeping their fans busy with all the recent news updates concerning the Star Wars franchise and it seems that they are not done.

Variety is reporting that Looper director Rain Johnson is now in talks to write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII! Given that Star Wars: Episode VII has just started filming this is pretty big news and shows that Disney is taking the franchise seriously and getting things ready well in advance.

Rain Johnson joins recently signed directors Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and Josh Trank (Chronicle) in the Star Wars family. Edwards and Trank have each signed on to direct their own stand alone Star Wars film, though what film they are directing has not yet been revealed.
