Review - Sucker Punch
Fans eagerly awaited Zach Snyder's Sucker Punch to be released in hopes that it would be a truly epic movie with visuals that would blow their minds. However, they may have listened to critics' reviews and waited to see it as Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules beat out Sucker Punch at the box office by about 5 million dollars. Is Sucker Punch everything fans have been waiting for or is it a movie to be put onto your "rent" list?
Synder admitted in a recent interview that the movie is titled 'Sucker Punch' for a reason. The story itself gave the movie its name. When you think you have it figured out, the story flips and changes hitting the audience with a sucker punch. Well this couldn't be more true. Despite how it looks, the story does come together in the end but I couldn't help but feel that I had been cheated out on something that could have been a little better. You walk away from the film not having connected with the characters like most films. This made several of the film's characters forgettable. However, lets be honest and admit that not everyone is seeing this for the characters. The visuals to this movie, in true Zach Snyder fashion, are stunning. The camera work and computer graphics for the film are spot on and it truly makes for an entertaining experience. Furthermore, you have hot girls who are barely dressed and armed with sub machine guns running around a fantasy world in which they kick the crap out of anything that crosses their paths. Entertaining? I would say so. But if you are seeing this movie for the whole experience and not just cheap thrills then you might be disappointed. Except for visuals or anything along those lines, this is not an award winning movie. It attempts to get the audience to think deeply about what is the driving force behind the story and these girls' characters but in the end you may just give up and still get the same experience as everyone else enjoying the action.
Final Thoughts: I recommend seeing Sucker Punch but if you can find movie deals or coupons online use them. You might be quite upset if you pay $12-14 (or more) to see this. Amazing visuals but overall lacking.
*Spoiler- Personal Thoughts*
I did enjoy this movie but I found myself laughing at it quite a bit as well. The acting in this movie wasn't terrible but it certainly wasn't great. Vanessa Hudgens on the other hand, in my opinion, acted awful here. I burst out laughing at some of the lines that she gave. She was one of the forgettable characters. It was interesting to see that everything that transpired in the film actually did happen in the real world in one way or another. You are looking at three worlds; reality, the dance club, and the fantasy world. It was interesting to see that her reality was so bad in the asylum that she retreated into this dance club dream world. And then within that world she would dance to distract people in order for her 'team' to steal items they needed to escape. However, we only see her sway her arms since when she danced she dreamt of a crazy fantasy world where her and her friends became a Charlie's Angels team. I know I am not the only one who made that connection! And they couldn't show her actually dance just once?! What was all that gyrating and moaning Sweet Pea was talking about? Ha. This new fantasy world was then filled with everything that is hot in culture today; clockwork/steampunk soldiers, orcs/dragons, samurai, and futuristic robot soldiers. A little gimmicky but hey it worked. But I also felt that Zack Snyder watched Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire one too many times before writing that dragon chase scene! One other thing, had he been alive today you know the role of 'Wise Man' would have gone to David Carradine instead of Scott Glen. It's not the same but he's a suitable stand in I suppose.
I enjoyed it. It was a fun movie to see just for the visual beauty of the fantasy scenes. Def not for the acting. :)
