Spidey Suit? Or Wrestling Costume?
With the release of the first official photo of Andrew Garfield in the new Spider-Man suit fans were instantly divided. Some fans felt betrayed at the new suit that Marc Webb, director of the new untitled Spider-Man reboot, had shown them calling it a joke. Others on the other hand praised the new look that the web-crawler was sporting and became excited about the possibilities and new directions that this movie could go in.
The days that followed gave us many new unofficial on-set images of what the Spider-Man suit looks like, this time with the mask on. Fans remained split. However, a new possibility for this suit has surfaced. What if this suit is not the final Spider-Man suit but instead the suit that Parker uses during his wrestling matches before he starts fighting crime as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man? Majik1387 on the Superhero Hype! forums provided a scan from the 2008 five issue series Spider-Man: With Great Power by David Lapham and Tony Harris. This short series tells the story between Peter's accident with the radioactive spider and the murder of his Uncle Ben. Take a look at the scan with the movie suit next to it.

Its hard to argue against the fact that Marc Webb could have been using this comic as the influence for the new look in his film. So what if this suit is indeed Peter's wrestling suit and the scene we have gotten glimpses of through set pictures and a short video is actually Peter chasing Uncle Ben's killer? This also might explain why Peter is carrying a backpack in the official photo - having brought the backpack to the wrestling match on that night.
This possibility could explain a lot and may make a lot of fans happy. However, there are aspects of the official photo that still point to the suit being his long-term suit; the claw (?) marks on his chest (from the Lizard?) and the fact that he is wearing his web shooters. Even as his long-term suit, this look isn't terrible. Definitely a more raw look for Spider-Man (as is the trend for recent reboots) and with the addition of web shooters it adds more flavor from the comics to the story. But we'll have to wait and see more official photos before we can really judge it. So whether this is his wrestling costume that was influenced from With Great Power or his long-term suit, its here to stay and fans will just have to learn to cope to a new look for our web slinging Peter Parker.
I don't like the suit, but do like the idea of going back to the web-shooters. I think that ideally represents spiderman. The fact that Spidey could and did end up without webbing some days because Peter was too broke to buy the stuff just really humanizes the character and makes it more epic when he succeeds in spite of it all.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about the web shooters. I would love to see a scene where he is mid fight and runs out of fluid and has that "oh no" moment. When he does finally pull himself out of that situation it shows Peter's ingenuity and adaptability to the circumstances that he is in. I feel Raimi didn't show enough of Peter's intelligence in the old series.
