Michael Keaton reveals why he left the Batman franchise and doesn't hold back.

When it comes to Batman films my favorite are those directed by Tim Burton and star Micheal Keaton. Nothing against the other films and franchises that have come later but I have always felt that Keaton nailed Batman. Before Joel Schumacher got his hands on the character and released the more cartoony and laughable Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, Tim Burton was creating the dark world of Gotham that Batman truly lives in. 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns will always stand out to me. Even though Warner Bros. moved on with a new director, they wanted to keep Michael Keaton on as Bruce Wayne / Batman but he had declined. When he declined they went with actor Val Kilmer and the rest is messy history.

Michael Keaton recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter while promoting his new film The Founder. During this interview Keaton revealed just why he past on Batman Forever and he did not hold back. Speaking about the script he was shown Keaton stated;

""It sucked. I knew it was in trouble when he [Schumacher] said, 'Why does everything have to be so dark?'""

That's a pretty honest, and accurate, statement. The film was horrible and it was a smart move for him to step aside and let someone else take over. How do you feel about Keaton's words on the film? Where do you put Batman and Batman Returns on the Batman film scale?
