Nintendo announces the 2DS! [video]
Nintendo made several big announcements today and gamers are having mixed reactions. Fans were excited to hear that the Wii U would be getting a $50 price drop but the real shocker involved Nintendo's newest handheld system.
In a unexpected move Nintendo has just announced the newest member to the 3DS family, the Nintendo 2DS! This newest handheld will do everything that a 3DS can do but will not have the functionality of playing in 3D. The pricetag set with this handheld will be $130 which is great for those gamers on a budget. The 2DS will be able to play all 3DS and DS games and no longer has the "clamshell" folding body. Instead it looks like a 3DS that has been opened up all the way and is completely flat.
Now calm down gamers. If you have a 3DS there is no reason for you to buy a 2DS. Since the 3DS is packaged with the warning that it is for players 7 years old and up (because of the 3D younger players may hurt their eyes), the 2DS is being geared at younger gamers and is even perfect for budget gamers. The design of the 2DS may not appeal to the older crowd but for younger gamers who may be prone to dropping things or breaking the hinges on the 3DS this design could work really well. And lets face it, if this new young audience and lower price tag means more sales then that is a great thing for Nintendo and ultimately a great thing for Nintendo gamers!
The 2DS will be released on October 12th which is the same say as the release of Pokémon X / Y. It will be available in two colors at launch; red and blue.

EDIT (8-29-13): Although the 2DS appears to have 2 separate screens it actually only has one!
"The system actually employs a unique single-screen design, with the extraneous parts of its one screen hidden by the hardware to create the impression that two screens are present. This means that both the top and bottom portions of the screen are touch-sensitive, but the top portion is simply covered by a layer of plastic to conceal it from human hands. In addition to its reduced battery life and monaural audio output, this single-screen layout allowed Nintendo to cut costs on the 2DS even further."
