Review - The Avengers
Marvel’s latest venture to the big screen has become an
instant smash hit. The Avengers have assembled and the world is taking notice.
As of May 8th, The Avengers has grossed $244,014,897 domestically and $500,100,000 over seas for a total of
$744,114,897 worldwide. These numbers
are simply outstanding!
The scope of this movie was truly amazing. It does a great job of mixing the different franchises together to create the full Marvel universe that the fans know and love. But really it was the small details that really made the movie shine. Nick Fury disobeying direct orders, Thor’s little "this will be fun" smile when he realizes that he will have to use his full power to fight the Hulk or his willingness to forgive Loki, Hawkeye helping injured civilians out of a crashed bus, and Tony Stark’s quick wit. To this end you have to give credit to the amazing cast and the superb acting that they put forth for these characters. The ensemble performed incredibly and new comer Mark Ruffalo nailed his performance as Bruce Banner/Hulk. I especially loved the Hulk’s first transformation where he turned and looked at Black Widow and you could see the humanity within his eyes. I could go through each actor or actress but it would be shorter just to say that they were all perfect. This was their moment to shine and they couldn’t have shone any brighter. One thing I can say however is that I would have liked to see a little more of Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill. But that is a small nitpick.
The movie has pretty good flow throughout the film. There are a few moments at the start that take some building up but then what movie doesn’t in the beginning. When making a movie of this scale you are attempting to build up a pretty big story and the wait in this movie is well worth it! The film does a very good job at reintroducing all of the characters so that if you hadn’t seen their respective movies then it is okay. Though there are nods to the different franchise films, their stories are used in ground work only. This is especially nice because their stories are relatively untouched and they can move on to their sequels and complete their story in a movie that will give them their full attention.
The final battle of the movie was jaw dropping. Some may say that the Chitauri didn’t put up much of a fight but for the purposes of this movie and the story they weren’t meant to. The battle serves as a universal message. It showed the many other worlds out there that the Avengers (and in turn the Earth) should not be messed with. This aside, each Avenger shines in this battle and the easy flowing teamwork that they display was straight out of the comics. For example, Captain America redirecting Iron Man’s repulsor blast with his shield to take out several Chitauri or Hulk and Thor slamming the building fragment into the head of the leviathan (the flying snake-like creature).
Above all else, one thing that this movie delivers is the constant flow of laughs. I truly lost count at how many times I burst out laughing during this film. Whether it was from Stark’s witty jokes or the banter between team members the jokes just kept coming. I don’t want to ruin too much so I’ll just name a few that I particularly enjoyed; the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent playing Galaga, Hulk punching Thor, Hulk smashing Loki, Stark sticking Banner with the electric prod, “He’s adopted”, and Cap getting excited at the flying monkeys reference. There are so many others but again I don’t want to ruin them by stating them all.
Overall, I cannot state fully how much I enjoyed this film. It’s hard for me to rate things a perfect score because there is always something that could have been improved or added, but The Avengers has accomplished just that. There is no reason not to give this film a perfect score. I highly recommend seeing it if you have not gotten the chance to yet. You’ll definitely enjoy it and you’ll walk out of the theater happy.
