Burying The Gate - The end of the Stargate franchise.
May 9, 2011 will stand out to Stargate fans everywhere. It will mark the date of the last new Stargate episode in 14 years. After just 2 seasons on the SyFy channel Stargate Universe has ended its run. Whether or not the show had intended on the episode titled 'Gauntlet' to be the last episode it tied together the show quite nicely and was definitely a fun (and for some, emotional) episode to end on. Who knows, maybe SyFy or another channel will pick it back up in the future.
I became a Stargate fan with the original movie in 1994 and became so excited when I heard they'd be making a show about it a few years later. Both my parents were fans of the movie and shows so I had many nights watching the new episodes with them which is a great memory to look back on. Things like Jack wanting to find "big honkin' space guns" to McKay screaming in a panic as he inevitably saves the day and Eli stepping up to solve some algorithm that proves to the Destiny crew why he is there will always make me smile. Some people think it may be weird for someone to get attached to a show but when it is there for 14 years and it's what you watch when you want to relax it's hard not to get attached. That single show can create new conversations and friendships that will last a long time.
On behalf of old and new Stargate fans alike, I would like to thank the cast and crew of all three shows (Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate Universe) for all the dedication and amazing memories they have given us throughout the years. 14 years is a long time and it is truly the end of an era. It appears that the people of Earth have chosen to bury their gate but as we know stargates don't remain buried forever. We'll be here waiting for the day when the gate is rediscovered and the adventure continues. Until then, "God Speed".

Unfortunately, when my blog came back up this morning, after Blogger was doing maintenance, I discovered that they had deleted my newest post and all six comments (7 including mine) to this post. This was quite upsetting but I was able to find the comments in my blog's email so I have reposted them so others can read them.
*The comments are back! Yay! (How strange.)
Great post! I watched SGU from the beginning and loved every minute of it. Actually, it was my inspiration to start blogging myself. Sad to see it go, but the Gate will rise again. :-)
ReplyDelete[Warning: SGU Season 2 end SPOILERS]
ReplyDeleteI like the way they tied up the ending, and still hold out hope that somehow, despite what has happened, Stargate Universe will start up again for another season.
The way they finished the last episode... it makes it extremely easy for them to kill of anyone they want, ready for a return to SGU.
Eli might not find a way to enter the pod, killing him. One of the pods might malfunction, killing the occupant. Or in the three years that there has been no contact with Earth, any character from there could be killed: car crash, natural causes, Lucian Alliance terrorist attack, etc.
Everything is set up so that the story can be picked up again, even if a few of the main actors cannot be re-cast and need to be killed off.
As mentioned on the show, it's the journey itself that is important, and for the past 14 years that has definitely been proven true. I'm holding out hope that one day, that journey will continue.
I love(d) all SG's, SG-1, Atlantis and Universe.
ReplyDeleteI hope it returns somehow...
For SGU the drama was subtle yet intense. The characters were the most real out of any of the shows. SG1 was a light-hearted romp from planet to planet. SGA was adventure with a splash of Science! I can always watch reruns, but I'd rather have new stories.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great post! I hope they decide to at least wrap up SGU in a movie and hopefully make one more SG1 movie also.
ReplyDeleteAn equal to Star Trek - They were all great!
ReplyDelete@Kai_Strife – Thank you very much! I’ll have to check out your blog :) And I hope the gate will be unburied soon.
ReplyDelete@Shane – The creators had said there definitely was a story for a third season so maybe one day we’ll get to see what happens. You raise a good point and I definitely agree that this ending opens up many possibilities for whichever actors decide to come back. I’d love it if they all returned though. The cast was brilliant.
@Koenraad – Perhaps with enough fan support someone may fun a new movie or third season. Or never say never to a fourth series.
@SamuraiX47 – I agree that the characters for SGU seemed the most authentic. You really got a sense of their struggle and what they were going through. Until we get new stories I have my DVDs and am currently rewatching all of SG-1. In the middle of Season 8 at the moment.
@Vic – Thank you so much. I’m glad to see that people are enjoying it :) Definitely follow my blog for more as I start writing my own articles. Like I said to Koenraad, if studios see the fan support never say never to it coming back somehow. Look what happened with Firefly ;)
@Murray Breen - That's definitely a compliment to the SG franchise. And I agree, all three series were fantastic!

The Highlander - I love the SG franchise and it bothers me that they do not finish a story or they rush the story. SyFy did not just do that with SGU they did it with Babylon 5 they rushed it to a close when it should of had a 6th season to end it and B5 the Crusade they bought it and then ended it in the middle of the first season even with good ratings. The SYFY channel does not care what the fan wants only what they want they only do things sometimes just to screw other networks & to waist there money.
